Trinity
An integration of “a light”, “a screen”, and “a music player”
“More than illumination.”
Many people pursue minimalist design but still end up with too many items around them, which goes against the idea of minimalism. Inspired by this, I want to use this table lamp design competition opportunity to create a product that truly embodies minimalism.
This IoT-enabled table lamp not only fulfills daily lighting needs but also provides essential information, streamlining everyday essentials into a single, elegant solution. It seamlessly blends functionality with aesthetic appeal, making it a perfect fit for those who value simplicity without compromising on utility.

Assembled Trinity Lamp With Extra Modules

Version 1: Desktop Combination
Considering the most common daily use scenario for a lamp - on desktop. I designed a small-scale module system that suitable for desktop and included various functions meet users’ needs, like task light, ambient light, screen, and speaker.
The innovative stacking design optimizes vertical space, freeing up valuable desktop area and offering greater flexibility for users.

Version 2: Pendant
To expand the potential user base, I developed a pendant system suitable for commercial, retail, and public spaces.
Company's image
The reception desk is often the first thing customers see, serving as a representation of the company’s image. With the modular pendant system, the company can play background music and ensure receptionists have adequate task lighting. Additionally, planters modular can be incorporated to show the company’s commitment to nature.

The pendant modular system is fully customizable, allowing users to combine functions to meet the specific needs of their company or retail space. Therefore, they can effectively attract their target customers.

2. Speaker module
3. Frame light module
4. Planter module
Version 3: Floor Lamp
A large scale, free standing floor lamp is the next generation. It is not only for individual use but can also serve public spaces. So I added more modular features, like a phone charger and a security camera.

Each modular can be rotated and adjusted based on the user’s needs. It can be a simple decorative floor lamp or can be very complex to include all daily use functions.

Information Architecture

This screen offers multiple key functions: controlling lights, playing music, and displaying daily information such as weather and time.
The OLED screen acts as the 'brain' of the module system, managing both the lighting and speaker modules. It continuously learns user preferences based on individual settings.

User Testing & Iteration
Goals:
-
Ensure the system is easy to use and provides a good experience to the target user.
-
Evaluate how well the user interface performs under real-world conditions.
-
Measure overall user satisfaction and engagement.

Feedback:
-
The first layer of the interface is missing key information, resulting in a more complicated user experience.
-
The light control section is unnecessarily complex, especially since users rarely need to make adjustments.
-
Current text and icon sizes are too large, which affects the overall visual balance of the interface.

In the early version, users had to tap through the first layer interface to select an album or adjust lighting, making the process complicated. After feedback, I revised it to show more intuitive information, so users can access what they need directly.
Some users were confused by the Bluetooth connection, as it only showed up after tapping the music button. To make this easier, I added a warning page for when Bluetooth isn’t connected, and I also simplified the connection process.
High Fidelity
This IoT table lamp offers 4 key functions:
-
Home Page Display: It shows daily information, including the date, time, location, and weather.
-
Scenario 1: Adjust Lighting: Users can slide through the screens to adjust different lamp modules.
-
Scenario 2: Play Music: Users can choose their preferred music by slide through albums. Connect to Bluetooth first.
-
Scenario 3: Bluetooth connection.

After user testing and multiple iterations, I finalized the high-fidelity interface pages for the main function screens. Users can control the pages with simple one-finger gestures. The goal is to create an intuitive and streamlined interface.
